Mountains of Glacier National Park in Montana

Travel is so, so important to me.

I make a point to go somewhere new every year, even if only for a few days.

This week, I was in Montana and western Canada, soaking in the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

I often get asked how I'm able to make travel such a big part of my life. Well, I've got some tips for you!

Tips for Traveling More

1. Take advantage of cheap flights.

If you're like me, you have a looooong list of places you want to go, and frankly, it doesn't matter which order you cross them off. So, when you find flights to Canada for more than 50% off the typical price? Go to Canada! And drive to that national park in Montana while you’re at it.

To find cheap flights, I subscribe to Scott’s Cheap Flights for international deals (which, by the way, secured me a $350 round-trip flight to France). I also search and set up email alerts with Skyscanner for domestic trips.

2. Travel with or to friends.

Seriously—lodging is SO much more affordable when you can divide the cost with others (or better yet, when you can stay with friends for free). I've visited Charleston, Savannah, Boston, Philadelphia, and Denver this way.

3. Don't dismiss quick getaways.

Even two or three days in a place is plenty of time to see and do a lot. Just make sure you do plenty of research and planning ahead of time so you're not wasting precious time once you're there.

4. Travel off-season and off-the-beaten-path.

Spring, fall, boutique hotels, smaller towns. You'll spend less, so you'll be able to go to more places. And chances are, you'll have more fun. No one likes a crowded and needlessly inflated vacation!

5. Save on accommodations to splurge elsewhere.

I use AirBnb and Booking.com for most places I stay, and I always "filter" the listings so I only see options under whatever max price I've determined. Or, I stay at budget-friendly hostels some nights, and luxury hotels other nights—which evens out in the end.
